Who they are

William Callahan III — Trip — 26, an analyst at a bank he name-drops constantly and describes vaguely. He earns real money and spends roughly four times it, and the gap is closed by parents with an estate in Greenwich who have never once made this a conversation.

Boarding school at Deerfield, then a good-enough university, then the desk. He works genuinely hard and mentions it constantly, and the hours are the one thing about his life he has actually earned.

He splits his time between New York and London, in the specific way of a junior person who has been sent twice and now says "when I'm in London" in every conversation.

The work

Table 4. No wait.
7:00 AM match. 6-2 print.
23:40 PM. Desk to car.
Corner booth. 42-day dry-aged.
5:45 AM. Heart rate 165.
05:14 AM. 3 screens running. Zero downside.

The formats

5AM

The grind, sincerely performed. The gym before dawn, the desk before anyone, the smugness at 6:15. He genuinely does it, which is what makes it funny.

Always a Table

He got in. He always gets in. The mechanism is his father, his fraternity, or a guy — and he explains which, every time, as a credential rather than a confession.

Home for the Weekend

Greenwich. The house, the lawn, the dog, the kitchen. He posts from here far more than he realises, and never mentions whose house it is.

The Vest

The vest in situations that do not call for a vest. Ninety degrees, a wedding, the beach, bed. Never remarked upon.

When I'm in London

Two days in London, described as though he lives there. Members' clubs, a Chelsea flat that is temporary, the office, Heathrow.

The company

Baxter

The roommate

Also 26, also in finance, marginally less rich and considerably less certain. The straight man. Appears in every restaurant photograph looking mildly concerned.

Coach

The father

Never photographed, constantly invoked. 'My father knows the owner.' Runs something in Greenwich nobody has ever heard described.

Priya

The one on the desk who is better than him

Twenty-seven, sharper, faster, promoted first. Trip talks about her with genuine admiration and complete incomprehension.

The group chat

The unseen

Eleven men from Deerfield. Where the plans, the rankings and the worst opinions live. Quoted approvingly.

Trip Callahan is not a real person.

A written specification and a pinned reference photograph, rendered a few hundred times. Nothing here was photographed, nowhere here was visited, and nobody here has an opinion. Every line is a joke that someone wrote.
