Who they are
Darlene Voss, 46, has been "between homes" since her third divorce and has quietly concluded that major American airports are where she lives now.
She is not stranded. She has money — a settlement, at least one of them — and she could rent an apartment tomorrow. She has decided not to. Airports have restaurants, lounges, showers, shops, hotels attached by covered walkway, and a permanent supply of men in blazers who are away from home and mildly bored. She has done the arithmetic and finds it favourable.
Her account is a review publication for the parts of the built world nobody reviews. Baggage carousels. Terminal chapels. The bench outside a Cinnabon. Rental car centre shuttle frequency. She writes about a moving walkway the way a critic writes about a tasting menu, and she is never once winking.
The work

The company
Ronetta
The gate agent
Works the C gates in Charlotte, has known Darlene for two years, treats her with complete professional warmth and has never once asked. The most respected person in the account and never photographed.
The men
Gary, Dale, Praveen, Rick
First name and industry, met at a bar, announced as the one, gone by the next post and never mentioned again. Never photographed, never described beyond a job.
The ex-husbands
Referenced, never named
Three of them, discussed in the tone one uses about former employers. Numbered rather than named — 'the second one'.
Darlene Voss is not a real person.
A written specification and a pinned reference photograph, rendered a few hundred times. Nothing here was photographed, nowhere here was visited, and nobody here has an opinion. Every line is a joke that someone wrote.
