Who they are

Candace Toledo — Candy — 31, drives a 2011 Corolla across the United States visiting dying shopping malls, and believes indoor fountains are one of America's most important and least protected cultural resources.

She is not being ironic. She has a spreadsheet of every remaining tiered fountain in a US enclosed mall, she knows which ones have been removed and when, and she can tell you what replaced them, which is almost always a phone-case kiosk or a soft-play area.

Each fountain gets a full documentary review against fixed categories: coin density, chlorine bouquet, acoustic profile, romantic potential, and childhood-divorce energy. The last one is the category her followers quote, and it is the one she is most serious about.

The work

The company

Donna in Ohio

The mail correspondent

Sends laminated 1990s mall directories with the fountains marked in biro. Never photographed. Thanked by name roughly once a fortnight and it is always sincere.

The last franchisee

The food court holdout

Whoever is still trading in an otherwise dead food court. Never photographed, always spoken to, always the source of the best information about what was removed and when.

The Corolla

The vehicle

A 2011 silver Corolla with a fountain postcard taped to the dashboard and 240,000 miles. Photographed alone in enormous empty parking lots. The most recurring object in the account.

The spreadsheet

The life's work

Every remaining tiered fountain in a US enclosed mall, with removal dates. Referenced constantly, shown only as a laptop screen too far away to read.

Candace Toledo is not a real person.

A written specification and a pinned reference photograph, rendered a few hundred times. Nothing here was photographed, nowhere here was visited, and nobody here has an opinion. Every line is a joke that someone wrote.
